No. 23 Milligan men’s soccer claims AAC regular season title
Milligan College, Tenn. (Oct. 27, 2012) — The No. 23 Milligan College men’s soccer team claimed their second consecutive Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season title and their second title in three seasons on Saturday afternoon as they dispatched Reinhardt 1-0 at Anglin Field.

“This is a great night and a great accomplishment for being picked third in the preseason poll,” Head Coach Adam Laney said. “The guys really battled to get to the top and played in the games that mattered and got it done. I am proud of the fact they can get a championship.”

The Buffaloes attacked early, but they were unable to break onto the board with shots from Lucas Maia (Rio de Janero), Chris Ochieng (Nairobi, Kenya) and Nahom Tekle (Louisville, Ky.). Ochieng, however, defeated the Reinhardt keeper in the 17th minute to give Milligan a 1-0 lead. Milligan was unable to add to their lead as they maintained the 1-0 advantage at the half.

The Milligan offense continued to keep attacking the net in the second half, but they were unable to add another goal. However, the Buffaloes defense continued to keep the Reinhardt offense under control to secure the match.

Defensively, Dan Ball (Chatham, England) recorded four saves in the game.

With the win, Milligan improves to 10-5 overall and wrap up AAC play with a 7-1 record to claim the conference title and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming AAC tournament, which is slated to begin on Nov. 2. The Buffaloes will have home field advantage throughout the tournament.

“I love that we have home field advantage,” Laney said. “Most of the season, I was dreading the prospect of going to Bryan and playing the tournament there in that tough environment. It is so nice to be at home and sleep in our own beds. It is such an advantage, and we hope to take advantage of it this year.”

Milligan will close out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 30, as they travel to the University of the Cumberlands. Match time in Williamsburg, Ky., is slated for 3:30 p.m.
