Men’s golf records solid opening round at NAIA nationals

Salem, Ore. (May 14, 2013) — The Milligan College men’s golf team finished the opening round of the 2013 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships inside the top 20 on Tuesday at the Creekside Golf Course in Salem, Ore.

The Buffaloes were led by Matthias Wild (Berlin, Germany), who finished the day in a tie for 33rd. Wild recorded three birdies on the first nine holes and ended the day with four straight pars to card a 74 to finish 2-over-par 74.

Milligan saw a trio of golfers finish in a tie for 80th. Hunter O’Neal (Bluefield, Va.) shot a 37 on the front nine to end the day with a 6-over-par 78. Mitchell Sutton (Locust Grove, Ga.) finished the day with two birdies on the final three holes to also record a 78 on the round. Kody Fawcett (Manitoba, Canada) recorded seven pars on the final nine holes to also card a 78.

Whit Brown (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) shot an opening round 80 as he recorded 10 pars in the round to round out the Milligan golfers.

As a team, Milligan finished the day with a team total of 308 to end the round in 18th place. Oklahoma City leads the event with a team total of 280.

The Buffaloes return to action in the second round on Wednesday, May 15, as they tee off at 1:30 p.m. (PDT).
