Milligan men’s basketball surges past Reinhardt in AAC tournament

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 21, 2013) — The No. 4 Milligan College men’s basketball team surged past No. 5 Reinhardt University in the final minutes to take a 76-68 victory in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday afternoon in the MeadowView Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn. The Buffaloes will face No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, Feb. 22, in the AAC semifinals at 7 p.m.

The Buffaloes opened the game on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes, but the Eagles battled back to tie the game at 13-13 with 13:12 left in the half. Morgan McLeod (Hickory, N.C.) and Kurt Brooks (Newport, Tenn.) hit baskets to put Milligan back in front. However, Reinhardt regained the lead at the midpoint of the half with an 8-0 run.

Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Brooks pushed the Buffaloes back into the lead before Reinhardt edged ahead 26-25 with five minutes left in the frame. Torian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.) sparked a 9-0 Milligan run, and the Buffaloes maintained a 39-32 lead at the half.

DeVault led the way at the half with 11 points. As a team, the Buffaloes finished the half 15-of-30 (50%) from the field and 3-of-5 (60%) from behind the arc. Reinhardt was 10-of-40 (25%) from the floor in the half.

The teams traded shots to open the second half before Reinhardt closed the gap with a 6-0 run to pull within 48-47. Milligan pulled away with shots from Cartree Pettis (Oviedo, Fla.) and Sitton to take a 61-50 lead with seven minutes left in the game. However, a 12-1 Reinhardt run tied the game at 62-62 with four minutes left.

Pettis hit four straight points to give Milligan the lead. From there, the Buffaloes outscored Reinhardt 25-7 in the final three minutes to secure the win.

DeVault recorded a game high 24 points and 17 rebounds, while Pettis finished with 20 points. Sitton recorded 14 points.

As a team, Milligan ended the game 27-of-52 (52%) from the field and 3-of-9 (33%) from behind the 3-point line. Reinhardt finished the game 20-of-74 (27%) from the floor and 7-of-23 (30%) from behind the arc.

The Buffaloes will continue the AAC tournament on Friday, Feb. 22, against top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan at 7 p.m., inside the MeadowView Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
