Milligan College, Tenn. (Jan. 16, 2013) — The Milligan College track and field program will kick off the 2013 portion of their indoor schedule at the prestigious Niswonger Invitational on Friday and Saturday in the MSHA/Athletic Center at East Tennessee State University.
The Buffaloes throws program will open the two-day event at 10 a.m., on Friday morning as Janie Smith (Kingsport, Tenn.), Haley Cox (Lake City, Tenn.) and Mikayla Westgerdes (Fort Recovery, Ohio) will compete in the women’s weight throw. Cox will also compete in the women’s shot put at 5 p.m., on Friday.
Shaka Andrews (Bristol, Va.) will lead the men’s throws as he will compete in the men’s shot put and weight throw. Andrews, who recorded a strong 10th place finish in the weight throw at Appalachian State and was the top non-NCAA D-I athlete, set a new school record in the shot put during the Niswonger Invitational last season.
Joe Camarata (St. Claire Shores, Mich.) will also compete in the weight throw on Friday afternoon, while Brandon Sissel (Greeneville, S.C.) will compete in the triple jumps.
Suzanne Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) will open the event for the Milligan runners as she will run in the women’s 400-meter dash at 12:40 p.m., on Friday, while NAIA Outdoor Track and Field qualifier Kevin Mowatt (Montego Bay, Jamaica) will run in the men’s 400-meter dash and 200-meter dash on Friday as he looks to qualify indoors for the first time.
The Buffaloes distance squads look to be led by a trio from the cross country squad that won their 10th straight AAC title. Natalia Rivas (Johnson City, Tenn.), Mackenzie Patten (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Meagan Wright (Florence, S.C.) look to qualify for the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in the 5K Invitational on Friday night at 7 p.m. It will be Wright’s collegiate track debut as a Buffalo after a stellar cross country season.
The two-day Niswonger Invitational is slated for a 10 a.m., start on Friday afternoon, and the last event will run at 6:40 p.m., on Saturday afternoon.
